    Sluggish performance with nvidia 185.18.14

I've been using the nvidia 180.60 driver and the performance is amazing: silky smooth window dragging and fast, fluid rotation of Compiz's cube. When I attempted to upgrade to the latest nvidia driver, 185.18.14, however, window dragging became sluggish (with tearing) and the cube rotation is abysmal. I'm not sure if there's a setting in my xorg.conf that is deprecated or what gives!?!? I'm anxious to check out some of the new features in the 185.x.x series drivers but I don't want to give up the great performance I experience with the 180.60 driver. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 amd64 with an nvidia 9400 GT (512 MB DDR2 RAM onboard...see my signature for the rest of my hardware.) I would appreciate any help in resolving this problem. I hear the 190.x.x series drivers are right around the corner and I fear performance will be degraded with those as well. Below is a copy of my xorg.conf:

    ---------- begin xorg.conf ----------

I would try running without any of the Options you have listed. The 185 series of drivers has very good defaults and performs extremely well for most people with the default settings.
Don't try to make something "fast" until you are able to quantify "slow".

Re: Sluggish performance with nvidia 185.18.14

Thanks Sedennie for the suggestion. My xorg.conf file had collected quite a few settings over the past two years (I've been using the same one for ages!) I took your advice and cleaned out all of the options under "Device" and then installed the newest 190.09 nvidia driver. Performance was...okay, but not as good as with the 180.60 and my old xorg.conf. So, I did some googling and began adding back a few options until I arrived at the following xorg.conf that seemed to restore most of the performance I see with the 180.60 driver. Any thoughts?
