Question best contrast vs. subpixel smoothing

    Hi
It's so fantastic that Ubuntu knows that I have a LCD screen and automatically can configure the font rendering setting for me.
However I find the best contrast setting to look far better than the subpixel smoothing which is selected by default for LCD screens.

Which one do you prefer? Should the default font rendering settings be changed?

Subpixel smoothing with full hinting looks far better on my screen.

    I vote subpixel as well.
It looks best on my dual lcd's.

Subpixel smoothing with full hinting looks almost the same as best contrast here. Although full hinting isn't default.

Perhaps it's just on my system the default settings doesn't look good.

I like the "smooth" look (Macbook Pro 15,4" , 1440x900)

The default for me is always slight hinting, which to be honest, looks horrible (might be my system though). First thing I do after reinstalling is always change the fonts and settings before I go blind

Subpixel + Slight Hinting is what looks best for me (Asus laptop 1280x800).

Subpixel & slight, without a doubt.

The screenshot is somewhat misleading as it's using Tahoma (not installed with Ubuntu), and appears to be from a very old release (Breezy or earlier) - the rendering may be a little different now.

    Resolution: 96 dots per inch
    Smoothing: Subpixel (LCDs)
    Hinting: Slight
    Subpixel Order: RGB
These settings are best for me (my monitor is Samsung SyncMaster 172s). With other options, fonts look just horrible.

Btw different fonts look better with different settings too, so just find the one that suits you best and enjoy
