Does ubuntu play any sound on startup? If not, maybe u don't have the audio drivers.. Else, if it play the startup "jingle", maybe is your multimedia program that don't find the codecs for the music or video files u want to play..

Most videos don't play due to the lack of codecs (legal reasons) on the default installation, but you can easily install them.

Follow this tutorial and you will be able to play all things you want.

You can also install vlc [apt-get], which does not require additional codecs to play videos.

Note: when you see [apt-get] after a link on my posts it means that you just need to click it to install the software. This is basically an easy way to perform an installation from the repositories without running the command on a terminal. This is the same as running the command sudo apt-get install followed by the name of the program.
