Talking Converted my niece 5 days ago!

So, she has an HP laptop which has been trouble since day one. Viruses, anti-virus didn't work, malware....takes 15 minutes to boot up and another 5-10 minutes before the OS is ready for user interaction, and the battery life just was non-existent (may really be a battery issue, so a new one is on order and should be received soon--but could also have been an issue with the CPU being at 100% most of the time too). She was a very unhappy camper to say the least.

So, after 2 system re-installations and the same results only to happen within a few weeks....slow system, anti-virus inoperable........etc...I asked her if she was willing to have Linux installed. I explained that I had only two issues with my own system, but those issues were self inflicted (half truth - I probably made things much worse by messing with things I had little knowledge of, but self inflicted nonetheless.

Going on two weeks, other than being separated from her iTunes for the moment (I plan on setting up VirtualBox with a shared drive to /home/kathy/music), she is enjoying the fact that her system boots up in about a minute and after login, she can IMMEDIATELY use the system.

so far, so good for a Ubuntu convert. She doesn't seem to want Windows anymore, except for iTunes which she has several hundred songs she bought and would like to re-download since she paid for them.

Congrats jflaker on making a wise decision.
As for the itunes problem you may want to take a look at this page;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari..._iPod_Managers

Ask your neice if she can download the DRM free songs.
That way they will be accessible and playable in Ubuntu.
Then it is just a matter of finding the right itunes manager for her.

may also want to check out gtkpod;
http://www.gtkpod.org/about.html

Hope this helps,

CCat

Viruses and trojans is a pain with Windows. Glad for her that she made the switch.
