Thread: External display via HDMI->DVI cable. Anyone using?

Question External display via HDMI->DVI cable. Anyone using?

    Hi,
Probably I should have posted it to hardware/laptops, but i found most messages about displays in this forum...

I have Ubuntu 9 on MSI PR211 laptop with ATI Radeon HD 3200 video card, 1280x800 laptop's resolution.

I'm connecting it to external Nec 1990SXi display using HDMI->DVI cable.
This Nec display has both DVI-I and DVI-D plugs - i tried both - same result:

When I start Display Properties it shows blank window which freezes.
    GNOME slows down.
It is trying to detect display, but seems it cant.

Though it displays picture from laptop on external display, its no use, because I need to set resolution 1280x1024 for external display, and this can't be done until display is detected.

Could anyone suggest please whats the problem?
I think it probably can't detect display because it's not DVI, but HDMI->DVI cable?

Is anyone using external display connected via HDMI->DVI cable successfully?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Uh oh... Sorry for being a bit lame
Downloaded ATI Catalyst for linux, which i thought was available for windows only, and it solved my problem!
Display preferences window stopped freezing and external display resolution set fine!!!
