This will probably happen. You used to have to use USB Modeswitch on the Huawei E160 modems, until the modeswitching became part of the driver. Your modem will probably automatically modeswitch on a later version of Ubuntu.
Unfortunately, the whole "virtual drivers CD" feature of these new USB devices is implemented differently every time; there's nothing standard about them, which means that the system has to be reverse-engineered with usb_modeswitch for every new device driver.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
