Unless you want the very most recent JRE (I think it is Update 14), you can install the JRE from the Ubuntu Multiverse repository.
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-bin sun-java6-fonts

Dev Testing since 6.10 Edgy Eft. YES I KNOW WHAT THAT DOES!!!
so now i have java installed and its working, but how do i update it to the latest version, because i dont think i downloaded the most recent one.

ubuntu repo. will not update java to latest one (latest one is java-6u14). because, according to policy multiverse packages will not receive update. so, u hav to use distro independent build (.bin) from sun's website & install it to get latest one. u will get both jdk & jre.
hope this will help.
