    Slow wifi (1 Mb/s) Atheros

    Laptop: Compaq CQ60-215DX

Using Jaunty and default ath5k driver for Atheros chipset (Jaunty auto-detected it). Wireless connects no problem and internet speeds are mostly okay, but network manager tells me my wifi speed is only 1 Mb/s and this is confirmed when I transfer files over Samba--speeds are capped at 1.2 MB/sec according to Nautilus.

What's weird is occasionally, network manager will tell me wireless speed is faster, but it's never consistent. Most times it says 1 Mb/s, occasionally it will say 5 Mb/s, 12 Mb/s, 16 Mb/s, etc.

I believe the speed should be 54 Mb/s, shouldn't it? My 10 year old Dell with a wireless PCMCIA card always says 54 Mb/s. It typically transfers files over Samba at 6-8 MB/sec.

    Any suggestions or workarounds?

It doesn't slow down internet speed, so in that sense it's not bad, but it does make transferring files over samba very slow, so in that sense it IS bad. Like I said, my other, 10 year old laptop with a PCMCIA wireless card, runs circles around this brand new laptop when transferring over samba.
