    Puppy Linux or DSL?

    Hey there!
In office I am working on an archaic 256MB RAM 500 some MHZ PIII system and had installed Intrepid on it. But ofcourse it is slow. I am trying to get the people here to use Ubuntu on their PC's instead of Windows but I need a user friendly yet light version OS. What do you say I should try out? Puppy Linux or DSL? I would need to set up Likewise for entering Windows Domain, Samba for using Network printer, Evolution Mail, Open Office 3.1 and of course there is the requirement of Firefox..

I will anyway be leaving the office in a month so need to get the things straight asap.. I might also need to give some training so I need to get working fast!

If there is some other OS which you recommend (I was also thinking of Debian Lenny) then do respond.. I haven't used any of these OSes..

Thank you all for your time

I've always liked to use Puppy on very low-end machines and it works pretty well. I think you should give it a go

It says somewhere that recommended config for Puppy is 256 MB RAM.. That means these computers just make the cut and that is the only reason why I am holding off

Well, Im typing this on a pIII 550 with 512mb ram on Xubuntu Hardy, get some more ram & try that, otherwise I recommend Vector Linux before you try Puppy or DSL.

thats for it to load completely into ram (the os and all installed programs) and run faster than anything you've ever seen before..... I'm serious, a file grep that took me around 20 minutes on ubuntu took less that 20 seconds using puppy, it'll run fine on around 128 though, you just won't get that blitzing speed

How about Debian Lenny and Slax?

    Re: Puppy Linux or DSL?

Slax is very lightweight, especially if configured properly. I also recommend puppy linux - the 256mb ram is for it to load itself entirely into ram, 128 is enough for it to run very fast! 256 is plenty.

Why don't you just try them all out

(see if Xubuntu works like mister_p said, otherwise ram is cheap as dirt at the moment.)

Puppy linux should work fine on 256mb ram - never tried DSL, but it should work too.

I agree with Mister_P and nice_like_rice. Try Xubuntu first. I've tried DSL before and it worked well.

    Re: Puppy Linux or DSL?

It's been a while since I've used either... but my impressions were that Puppy is nicer for most folks to use. However DSL is Debian, and if you're going to be doing much customization, it's hard to beat Debian.
