Lubuntu 11.10 is the main OS which is supposed to control the whole thing. I know that because:
1- It's the first choice on the menu even though I can see the menu but when I press Enter blindly, it boots to Lubuntu 11.10
2- I'm very careful when it comes to Multi-Booting Systems.

I can't see the menu at all even when I press and hold "Shift" key.

I'm using GRUB Customizer by the way and I installed GRUB to the MBR of sda but that did not change anything.

I guess I need to use the other program (forgot the name) to re-install GRUB and if that didn't help then I need to post the output of the booting script.

    Thank you
Did you try setting the /boot/grub/grub.cfg timeout to -1 ? That should force Grub to display the menu.

Ok, it's time to see the RESULTS.txt. Setting the timeout to -1 should have displayed the menu. Two reasons that is may not is that it is a different Grub (which you have checked) or that the 'recordfail' section of the Grub menu is not working or not present. Seeing the RESULTS.txt may provide answers.

    Re: Grub 2 Basics

I don't see problems, but we can try a few more things related to the Grub display.

First, I'm assuming you changed the timeout back to 15 after -1 didn't work. If it's video-related, did you have to press ENTER to get it to boot when you had it set to -1? That would indicate that the Grub menu was there waiting for input but that you couldn't see it.

Open /etc/default/grub and change one or both of these settings. You can try one at a time if you want to know which one is definitely needed, or change both just to see if either works. Make the changes so the line(s) look like the ones below:

    Code:
GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 # Remove the # icon at the start of the line.
GRUB_TERMINAL=console # Remove the # icon at the start of the line.
And if you want to stop the menu until you make a selection:
    GRUB_TIMEOUT=-1 # Change from 15 to -1
Save the file, then run "sudo update-grub" and reboot when you want to see if the changes now allow the menu to be displayed.
    Back to Xorg...

I did notice that too but of course you are the expert here

Before I change anything, I'd like to confirm one thing here.
I did not change the time out yet. It is still "-1".
Now, whether it's 15 or -1, in both case, I have to press ENTER to get it to boot.

So Yes, I had to press ENTER.

As I mentioned, it's there but screen goes off with "Input Not Supported" message. That message from the Screen/monitor itself if you know what I mean. It's like the PC is off or not connected.

So, shall I do the changes you suggested?

    You are THE MAN, Chief

    Code:
    GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480
Did the trick I did not have to change both.

Now, may I ask why is that? this is the first time I use Lubuntu as my main OS. With other *buntus, it was working without changing anything. I never had to change that at all. Same PC, nothing changed except the main OS. Weird

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Yes. I am pretty certain it is a video problem and that Grub is not setting the mode correctly. Setting the resolution to the most basic (640x480) and/or using console instead of gfxterm makes the display about as basic as you can get.

Leaving it at "-1" helps when you get distracted during the reboot and forget to watch what happens...

    Re: Grub 2 Basics

    Hi

Well I have lost almost two days to fix my problem but it has not been possible, maybe it is easy to solve and I am a little bit retarded, I don't know, but the point is that I am losing a lot of time with this, and this forum seems the solution, so let's see if anybody can help, it would be very appreciated.

I want to dual boot w7 and ubuntu 11.10 (first I installed w7 then ubuntu 11.10) but when I start the pc I can't see any screen with options, it starts automatically from ubuntu, I can't see w7.

    The partitions have this aspect:

105 mg that w7 installed by default (sda1)

    52 gb where I have w7 (sda2)

163 gb nfts partition simply to store info and be able to see it with both operating systems (sda4), i created this partition after installing ubuntu

    104 gb ext4 partition (sda3), extended. With ubuntu 11.10, inside this partition I have 31 GB for /home( sda8 ), 8 gb for /tmp (sda7) 61 GB for / (sda6), and 4gb for /swap(sda5).

1.-I don't remember well if the 8gb partition is tmp or data, or something like that, a friend helped me.

2.-If this seems a complete nonsense, yes, it is possible, I am new in linux and still doesn't understand clearly what the hell I am doing.

3.- I read the manual but still I don't understand a lot of things.

4.-I tried to put -1 to set timeout and yes, I could see some progress . Shift, esc or any other button did not make anything until that change, then If I pressed esc I entered in a grub rescue menu or something like that, I tried to use two options, restore grub, and other option to mount partitions but it still starts directly to ubuntu 11.10.

Now I try to restore default settings to "set timeout" but I see two similar lines in the file grub.cfg , line 59 and line 61 , I don't remember wich line had 15 originally so my file now looks like this one:

    if [ "${recordfail}" = 1 ]; then
    set timeout=15
    else
    set timeout=10
    fi

    ¿Is it configured correctly?.

5..-I saw this in a previous post:

" If your normal OS is not currently in control, or to make it the controlling Grub, boot into that OS and run the following, with X being the boot drive (sda, sdb, etc.
    Code:
    sudo grub-install /dev/sdX "

I suppose that I should do this but I don't know which letter should I use.

6.- I made the results.txt file, Hope this helps to understand the problem. I have uploaded it as adjoint file, but if you cannot see it, please tell me and I will use another method. I made this file while "set timeout" was -1.

7.- With the discs utility of ubuntu I can see that windows 7 and the 163gb nfts partitions maybe are not mounted because I can choose the mount option wich doesn't happen with the ubuntu partition, ¿Should I mount w7 partition?.

    THanks folks.
