i just got an error saying: no operating system....

Did this happen when booting from the Window CD? Or were you able to run "Start Up Repair"? Were you able to change the boot order in the bios? Did your trying booting from Windows CD with only the Windows drive attached to the computer?

How early did you got the "no operating system" message? Did you get to the screen with "Use recovery tools ..." ?

Please describe exactly all the step you took and what happened.

followed the steps to the t, I entered the command you gave me in terminal.. rebooted, changed boot order, did the startup repair with windows disk, which failed and asked me to "send to microsoft" prompt (i tried it this morning, got same error)

I then rebooted, changed back the boot order... and error: no operating system found...

anyway I re-installed linux (ubuntu karmic kuala)

I still see my drive with all my files, but cant seem to boot into windows.

I did update the mbr while in startup repair using command prompt. but it kept saying something along the the extent that it can't find any drive (i think a windows drive)

While I'm writing up the instructions for manually repairing the Windows boot loader, could you run the boot infos script again and post the RESULTS.txt?

Boot from the Windows CD (with the windows drive first in the boot order).
At the screen with the "Startup Repair" choose "Command Prompt"
Type

 diskpart

and then at the 'diskpart' prompt:

 list volume

This will list the drive letters for all the 'NTFS' and 'Fat' partitions on your computer. Determine the drive letter for your Windows 7 partition. In the following I'll assume it is "C:". If the drive letter of your Window 7 partition is different, you need to replace all "C:" accordingly. Also determine the drive letter for the CDrom drive, I'll assume that is "E:". Type

 exit

to exit the ``diskpart'' prompt.

Type

copy E:\bootmgr C:\

mkdir C:\BOOT

copy E:\BOOT C:\BOOT 

bcdedit /store C:\boot\bcd /set {default} osdevice boot

bcdedit /store C:\boot\bcd /set {default} device boot

bcdedit /store C:\boot\bcd /set {default} path \Windows\system32\winload.exe

bcdedit /store C:\boot\bcd /set {bootmgr} device boot

Depending on the DVD you are using you might also have to type the following three lines

bcdedit /store C:\boot\bcd /deletevalue  {default} detecthal 

bcdedit /store C:\boot\bcd /deletevalue  {default} winpe

bcdedit /store C:\boot\bcd /deletevalue  {default} ems

Just go ahead and type those three lines. But you might get an "element not found" warning, which you can ignore.


Reboot with the Bios set to boot from Ubuntu drive.
Boot into Ubuntu. (make sure that The Universe Repository is enabled in Systmem->Administration->Software Sources. Then install and run "testdisk via

sudo apt-get install testdisk
sudo testdisk /dev/sdb

Press "enter" to "proceed"
Press "enter" to select "intel"
Use the "down arrow" and "enter" to select "advanced"
Use the down error to select the "Windows 7" partition and then "enter" to select "boot"
Use the "right arrow" key and "enter" to select "Rebuild BS"
Once done just follow the instruction on the screen to save the new boot sector and quit testdisk.

sudo update-grub

Reboot and hope for the best.

I don't think that really worked, when i reboot, it goes straight to ubuntu, doesn't even show grub.

I forgot to mention this but i was running a 64bit version of win 7, and this version of ubuntu is also 64bit.

I was able to boot into windows just fine. Had 2 entries in there, one for the old win 7 setup (noew linux) and one for the newer and stable setup (a partition of my 400GB drive) which i really need to access

I did run update-grub multiple times, no signs of windows yet.

should i try manually add the windows entrie to the grub config file??

ok some progress. The error message in RESULTS.txt for the sdb5 boot sector disappeared. Did you run "testdisk" more than once?

You put the boot files onto /dev/sdb1, but they need to be on /dev/sdb5. I don't know why "update-grub" did not detect Window 7. Maybe because the Window 7 boot folder is called "BOOT" instead of "Boot" . So try this in Ubuntu:

cd /mnt
sudo mkdir  1 5
sudo mount /dev/sdb1 1
sudo mount /dev/sdb5 5
sudo mv 1/bootmgr 5/
sudo mv 1/BOOT 5/Boot
sudo update-grub

if update-grub detects Window 7, reboot and try to boot Window 7.
if not,let me know and I'll show you how to create a custom entry for Window 7.
