Sierra and Lucasarts made a bunch of good ones. Quest for Glory (series), Sam and Max, The Dig, Indiana Jones, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, Space Quest (series).

Well well been playing amazon queen - real blast from the past! Will look for more up to date, perhaps text based adventures I think. Understand earlier replies now v dated and more than mildly un-pc.
