I need to configure Pidgin to use a proxy server but it only gives me the option of setting the GNOME proxy. Is there a way to have only Pidgin use the proxy server while other applications connect directly to the Internet?

My version of pidgin allows me to set a proxy server via, "Tools->Preferences->Network". That should be a pidgin only setting.
Don't try to make something "fast" until you are able to quantify "slow".
The newest version of Pidgin can be obtained from Getdeb if you would prefer to have the latest, greatest...

The dialog from "Tools->Preferences->Network" is actually gnome-network-properties which sets the GNOME system-wide proxy server.
