    System slows down with high IO?

    Two things:

    First, when I copy a large a file, the system just slows down and I can't hardly do anything. For example, Firefox just locks up and turns gray.

    Second, DVD playback crawls even if nothing else is going on in the system.

    Details:

    Ubuntu 9.04 AMD64
    Gateway MT3418
    2GB of RAM
    Western Digital 5400 RPM PATA drive
    Cdrom is PATA too
    UDMA is enabled on both.

    Any ideas?
