I got the same MBP just yesterday. I have been ubuntu users for few years now and I'd rather keep using that. Did you encounter any other problem?

I am quite amazed by how MacOSX is handling the battery life (7 hours is wow) and the suspend/resume routine (you open the lid and it's just ON!); how do these two compare under Ubuntu? Can anyone make a comment?

So far I haven't really used it yet, sorry. Suspend, hibernate and restart all don't work for me, so unlike OS X you have to shut it completely off each time you stop using it with Ubuntu. Can't comment on battery yet as I haven't used it without power supply so far.

It surely is one of the best quality pieces of hardware that I've come across so far, though, that's why I bought it right after release, since I've been considering getting the "old" 13" unibody MacBook for quite a while anyways.

I have installed 9.04 and of course I have the same problem.

Other things that do not work despite using the mactel ppa are:

    *brightness of the screen:*
cannot be regulated in any way: no applet, no keys, no automatic
also pommed doesn't work (version 1.25) as it complaints that the macbook is unknow.

    *suspend / resume / restart*
none of them works. Only shutdown does.

    *nvidia 180*
    makes compiz crash. 173 works

    other things seem to work.
If you or anybody else find something new please update.

Granted I'm using Gentoo with 2.6.30, so my information may not be the most applicable, but nvidia 185.18.14 works really well with compiz for me. Try compiling and installing them.

I'm having issues with sound too, as well as suspend, resume, and restart, so no help there unfortunately.

Install nvclock to control screen brightness.

+1. I'm having exactly the same problem with sound as you people.

My outputs look exactly like the OP's, and did pretty much the same as him (options, new alsa, etc).

Looking forward to get the sound working!

Re: Sound on a Macbook Pro 5,5?

    Some update:

    nvidia drivers 185.x.x work nicely
the deb package can be find at this ppa
    https://launchpad.net/~thefirstm/+archive/ppa

nvclock works for changing screen brightness but a better way is to install
    nvidia_bl_dkms from the mactel repository
    https://launchpad.net/~mactel-support/+archive/ppa
    adding the line
    nvidia_bl
    to the file /etc/modules

This way screen brightness can be controlled through the F keys and also will adjust automatically with the light sensor. If you are not happy with the automatic adjustament you can customize values in gconf-editor apps/gnome-power-manager/ambient

The touchpad works but tapping doesn't work out of the box. You need to configure certain variables using synclient. In my case I changed
    synclient TapButton1=1
    synclient TapButton2=2
    synclient TapButton3=3
    synclient PalmDetect=1
    synclient VertEdgeScroll=0

    more later

    Hi guys,

I have one of the 5,5's. However, I don't use Ubuntu, I use Arch Linux.

Just to let you know, I emailed the pommed author and sent him some output so he could update pommed for the new 13" Macbook Pro. You can download the source for the updated version (1.27) from the git repository here.

    Hope that helps.

OP, have you emailed Kacper regarding this? If so, have you received any reply?

Re: Sound on a Macbook Pro 5,5?

Hey guys, there's a lot of talk on this thread about the 5,5 (13" pro), but does anyone know if this also applies to the new 15" (that is, the 5,3)? Because that is what I have and I'm not getting any sound either. I'm going to assume the problems with the 5,5 will carry over to the other new ones as well, unless someone tells me that a solution already exists.
