    Question Internet speed help?

Okay, i pay for att's elite dsl which is 6000kbps. I tested my download speeds at dslreports and got a result of 5000kbps. Can someone explain why if im downloading a file at 130kbps why my dad cant browse the web. Or if i am playing xbox live if my dad stream one video why does my connection go to crap. I have never gotten a download speed over 700kbps.

Is there something im missing and wrong or am i getting what i pay for?

I have four computers on my network and a netgear wireless router provided by att. and my ports are open for programs i use for downloading.

Please help me if there is any way i can speed up my downloads or if there is any problems that i cannot realize.

    Thanks

do you have filters on the telephones?

Also, you have to remember that the connection between you and what you are downloading will always only be as fast as the slowest link between the two.

Like trwww said, filters (and splitters) are bad juju with DSL.

You are also at the mercy of what your neighbors are doing on your node. If they are all streaming live porn, you may be out of luck.

    What browser are you using?

There are a lot of ways to speed up Firefox, for instance.

Again, as trwww said, if you are downloading from a source that can only serve 700kbps, that's the very best you'll get. That will be degraded by all of the switches between you and the site you are downloading from, etc.

also if your both using the connection your ping will decrease along with your connection and bandwith will fill rapidly. Also the sever your connected to It might not be sending alot of data to you might be able to get 7MB the sever might only be able to send 500KBS to a person. Also depending on how far away you "Box" is will also increase/Decrease your speed. I recommend cable or Fiber optics.

Looks to me like you get just slightly better service than basic DSL. I would raise a stink to find out exactly what you're paying the extra money for.

    Re: Internet speed help?

im paying $32 a month for att's fastest dsl i can get without getting a u-verse bundle. I want to buy u-verse so i can get 18mbps speeds but my dad has direct tv sattelite and he thinks that u-verse doesnt have as much hd cause hes to dumb to research... the worst part is he watches more shows online in hd then he does on his tv. lol but then again i have come to not expect much from him mostly because he pretends to know more then he does about computers and always messes up my network and his laptop. and is a control freak so i often have break into his accounts and fix everything he breaks.

I do have a phone filter and splitter but what should i do if i remove it the phone gets feedback and noise. I understand everything else.

At one level I see what you mean, but at another level I'm going "huh?"..... I always thought that some kind of arrangement to separate the POTS signal and the ADSL signal was a good idea.

(Background to this remark: I'm at a place where I'm going to have to review what I have plugged into the phone line - sound effects from my ADSL connection are intruding onto my phones, but that's probably best dealt with on another thread.....)
