    Booting

I cannot get my desktop to boot from XP cd. I currently have ubuntu 8.10 on my desktop and that is all it will boot even if i change where it boots from. I do not exactly know how to go about fixing this.

    Welcome to the Ubuntu forum!

If you are trying to boot a CD, you need to change your BIOS option to make the CD the first boot option. Usually, your BIOS will have a key that you can press while the BIOS is on the screen that lets you select the CDRom to boot first.

On quite a few, it's either the F8 or F12 key, but your may differ. Just watch the screen closely while it's booting and you should see what key to press. If you miss the opportunity to press it, just reboot and press it the next time.

In some older PCs you will need to change the BIOS settings from in the BIOS itself. If that's the case, the BIOS boot screen will tell you what key to press.

Of course, if you have your PC's manual handy, you can just look it up.

    Re: Booting

Have you gone into the BIO and changed the setting in the BIOS itself, rather than using a key press to do it?

    You are very welcome!

Just for my own curiosity, and to possibly help others with the same problem, how did you fix it?

I'm going to speak "that which is not spoken"

    FOR THE RECORD!

    Dear Audience,

We dearly love you all and welcome you to our humble flock, but...

    please, Please, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In your first post provide complete information:

    make
    model
    any hardware changes/additions
if it's a custom machine then give us ALL the individual component information
    information on peripherals(printers, scanners, etc.)

    operating system(s)
    additional software added(especially recently)

    your skill level:
    "what's a CLI"
    "I've heard of that"
    "I've seen one of those"
"I've seen one of those in the wild"
"I've actually keyed into the CLI AND pressed the red button"

    "what's a partition"
    "I've heard of those"
"No matter how much forethought you put into partitioning...afterwards you'll ALWAYS wish you had done it differently"

    "ew, what's a grub"
    "don't some people eat those"

"if we can just print money...why don't we just print a couple million for everyone on the planet and be done with it?"

thus begins another maddening day in the funny farm

"think of each thread as a story...it needs a beginning, and content/context, and an ENDING"
