Exclamation Huh? no one is using Blu-Ray burners yet? Well, I want to!

Can it be done in Ubuntu?

    (I want facts not opinions.)

What do I need to do to get an internal or external Blu-Ray burner to play and record discs in Ubuntu?

    Thank you!

    Hi,

Yes it can be done. Here is some documentation for its use in 8.10. I am not sure how well blu ray is working in 9.04.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks - yes I saw that -

FWIW I am NOT looking to play movies (there's no Dolby/DTS 7.1 player out ther anywhere) but because I sometimes need gigs of space and I need a "burner" for my game PC - why get DVD when I can get a BluRay?

So what about 9.04 and beyond???

I was hoping to look into rendering BluRay discs from HDCam tape sources. In my line of work having a BluRay back-up can be a big bonus, (and the filmmakers would pay handsomely if I could provide that little service, I hope

Assuming I have the proper cards and inputs on my machine, is this something that can be done in 9.04? Thanks.

What is the application that burns BluRay in Ubuntu? K3B would be great, Brasero not so much.

It might be an accepted format, but at what cost? You can't play a disc you'll buy next year with your current player, and the media isn't cheap either!

I have spent the evening researching this question. Take a look here:
    http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/

Version 7.0 of dvd+rw-tools supports Blu-ray. Look here for the download page:

As I understand it, you can burn and you can copy. But to bring it up as say, ext2, would require kernel support which is explicitly not in Ubuntu. Anyone, please correct me if I got that wrong.

I am in the process of trying to figure out if LG's combo Blu-ray/DVD/CD Burner Model BH08LS20 is supported. I fear that the only way to find out is to purchase it then try it. $250 ..... Sigh.
