has anyone here tried portable apps in ubuntu? or is there a linux version

so i downloaded basically every app that i would need for day to day computer use, with hopes to run my computer off my flash drive - its a net book and i want to free up space.

but when i finished the download i realized they were all windows programs :0 - so i have them all functioning under cross over, but before i go removing all my ubuntu programs i would like to know if this is a good idea, do you think can i rely completly on portable apps and cross over off my flash drive to do most of my day to day things ? with the exception of firefox and open office, beacause they are rather large programs i will leave them on my computer

but any thoughts on portable apps for day to day netbooking ?
oh , and is there any version of portable apps made for linux ?
i have googled a bit for some, but nothing turns up ?

so, what are your thoughts ?

Here are some linux portable apps resources:

    http://www.portools.com/

This list, from Wikipedia, is a mixed list, but you'll find some linux apps mixed in throughout the list:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...e_applications

Here is a list from HackToLive of linux apps:

    http://hacktolive.org/wiki/Portable_Applications_(Linux)

    Another site:

    http://portableapps.com/apps

Also, don't forget that you can use the USB Startup Disk Creator to make your own customized, portable version of Ubuntu. Get a large USB stick and you can carry everything you need in your pocket.

    I hope this helps...

    Hi,

I use the PortableApps for windows program via Wine.
A single Panel shortcut brings up the menu below.

Many portable windows programs do not work properly or even at all using Wine.

My regards and it's good to be sharing this thread with friends

It seems that you should use Puppy Linux. The whole thing can run off USB stick: http://www.puppylinux.com/

Re: has anyone here tried portable apps in ubuntu? or is there a linux version

    Hi,

I should explain that none of my friends use 'buntu so I have Wine on my Hard Drive and PortableApps and portable windows programs on a Flash Stick so that when I'm away I can use their Windows machines. I actually have some 40 Windows programs, including Open Office, on a 1 GB stick but the ones I use through Wine are directly interchangeable.

    My regards

jasper, ya thats how i plan on running mine ....
because i will be using windows machines at school, and ubuntu at home
but also because i plan on freeing up some space on my net book and cant think of a better way than by cutting a few apps out by running them off my flash drive.

    Hi,

In another recent post of yours I recall, hopefully correctly, that you have a 512 MB Flash Stick.

If you decide to get a larger stick, I suggest you check the claimed read and write speeds (as some are significantly faster than others) before you decide which one to buy.

    Good luck

yeah, i want my 512 for windows apps
but i decided today that i need a fall back drive
i checked the read write of both drives im considering, and they said 480 meg a sec and up.
but iv read that the pnys are slow, either way though i think ill go with the pny.
