Help, I can't install any program

Hello friends,
I'm a very new to Ubuntu. I've downloaded many software from web but cant find it how to install them. I thought it had the same or likely to same procedure like Windows XP, but not the same. I'll be very glad if you help me. Thanx in advance . . .

1) What software do you want to download?

2) Most software can be downloaded from the Repositories. For some software you may need to open either All Open Source Appllications or All Available Applications.

3) Applications > Add/Remove is the easiest way to install. Note: you may need to set Show to one of the above mentioned in #2.

4) Read How to Install Anyting in Ubuntu.

I am a newbie too.
I was also confused a bit about installing ubuntu , but if you explore a bit you'll find easy to use it.

So What type of file did you download.
Is it .deb or .bin ........?
