    How to Disable 3D Graphics?

I was working on a dual screen setup recently and I could not get the maximum resolution supported by the monitors. Eventually got it to work using the command xrandr (followed by many parameters of course), but I noticed that 3D no longer worked. I realized that the video card did not support 3D graphic at the maximum resolution supported by the monitors but it did support 2D graphics at that resolution.

I want to understand more about what I did in getting this to work...

How can I simply turn off 3D graphics? How can I turn them on if they are currently off? Are there any commands that can query the video card asking for the maximum 2D and 3D resolutions?
