I'm currently using 9.04 server as a filesharing server on a local network. Since it is connected to the internet, should I bother with a firewall, or will it be fine since I'm not doing any sort of webhosting?

If it is connected to Internet, then its better to have a firewall.
Based in my recently-added servers logs, they receive lots of attack attempts everyday... Even it may not happen anything without a firewall, I suggest to use it and only enable what must be enabled... with UFW will be enough.
