    I had shares working perfectly with Win7 for a while, but they are broken again. I won't have time to look into this seriously for a few days. Sorry. Most problems I've run into with Win7 have been related to firewall or network security (anti-virus) issues, but there are a handfull that don't seem to fit in that category.

    To anyone with problems connecting to Win7 shares: What version of Win7 are you using?

    Re: Howto: Fix Windows share browsing issues

    Hi Dmizer and all

    Following up from my previous post #240 I have been spending far too long on Google and have noticed the following points -

    My Karmic 64 bit has installed Samba 3.4.0

    The latest stable version of Samba is 3.4.3 ( source - http://www.samba.org/)

    In the release notes for Samba 3.4.3 is the following (source - http://www.samba.org/samba/history/samba-3.4.3.html ) -

    This is the latest stable release of Samba 3.4.

    Major enhancements in Samba 3.4.3 include:

    o Fix trust relationships to windows 2008 (2008 r2) (bug #6711).
    o Fix file corruption using smbclient with NT4 server (bug #6606).
    o Fix Windows 7 share access (which defaults to NTLMv2) (bug #6680).
    Do you think this is relevant to my or others Win 7 related issues ?

    Would it be worth considering compiling 3.4.3 from source ?

    I would be interested in any knowledgeable replies,
    I personally am new to Linux so much of this is beyond the scope of my knowledge, although I have compiled and installed a couple of programs successfully via tutorials.

    Any thoughts

    Regards

    Mark

    (I Love that!)

    Great questions and I am looking forward to the answers to this as well

    No matter what I do in reading every resolution from here and Google I am still not seeing what everyone else seems to resolve.

    I now have a twitch on my eye that is of grave concern.....

    I will try the new Samba to see if that resolves it...

    With a kernel update today, I am now able to see the network shares on my Win 7 machine. I can open the shares of all within that machine with the exception of a specific directory/share I created called UbuntuShare.

    I get the following error message...

    Could not display smb://xxxxxx/UbuntuShare The file is of an unknown type

    As a test, I created a new share on Win7 and I can now access that one no problem...So whatever credentials or smb data of the original UbuntuShare are not resolved but that is no issue as I can simply recreate or work with any new share.

    My Samba version is now at 3.4.0 and I did not compile anything to et there I am assuming it was a part of this mornings update package...

    I am still unable to browse the Ubuntu shares from Win7 but I can access them through IP so I am not as concerned about that lack of browse capabilities....

    Hope this helps....

    Re: Howto: Fix Windows share browsing issues

    Hi all....

    VastOne -

    Glad to hear of your success in connecting to your Win 7 machine, even if connecting from your Win 7 machine to Ubuntu isn't quite as flawless.

    For myself, I too received a number of updates including the Kernel, although my installed version of Samba was already 3.4.0 so wasn't changed.

    But after reading your reply I was quite optimistic about finally resolving my Win 7 networking woes. Unfortunately nothing has changed at my end. I can still see the Win 7 machine but attempting to connect to it receives the previously described password / username prompt.

    I have checked and double checked the Win 7 sharing settings until i can see them in my sleep, but still no go. I find it doubly frustrating that all my other Windows machines connect to it without fail or username/password requests.

    Ironically considering your reply, my Win 7 machine can connect to the Ubuntu shares at each and every attempt.

    I am now at a loss what to try next, but have noticed an alpha version of Samba 4 in Synaptec, that is becoming more tempting with every failed attempt.

    I think probably my next step will be to un-install Samba etc and then re-install and start the tutorial again from scratch, but I fear i may be grasping at straws!

    Either way I am not beaten yet (this comment is subject to review ) and will continue in my attempts to beat the Win 7 machine into submission.

    I fear that if and when this is resolved it will turn out to have been caused by some embarrassing oversight or omission on my part, and rest assured I shall return and post the error so others may have a laugh. But until then i shall continue telling myself that with every failed attempt something new is learned.

    Regards

    New shares on Win7 are inaccessible also?

    The only things I have done to the Win 7 was the change in security policy following this guide -

    http://www.builderau.com.au/blogs/co...tm?p=339270746

    and these changes in this forum -

    samba and winbind issues

    Dear dmizer,
    I am posting to this incredibly helpful thread in the hopes that you will be able to answer my samba/winbind question.
    I upgraded a fully functional 64-bit 8.04 to 9.04 without a problem. When I updated to 9.10, however, I got the following errors:
    Code:
    errors were encountered while processing:
    samba
    winbind
    E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
    A package failed to install. trying to recover

     *Starting Samba daemons
        ...fail!
    invoke-rc.dL initscript samba, action "start" failed.
    dpkg: error processing samba (--configure);
      subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
    Setting up winbind (2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.1) ...
      *Starting the Winbind daemon winbind
       ...fail!
    invoke-rc.d: initscript.winbind, action "start" failed.
    dpkg: error processing winbind (--configure);
      subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
    Errors were encountered whle processing:
        samba
        winbind
    Please note that I do not seem to be having issues in accessing my windows shares on my home network, but i do get this message with every package update, and it bugs me.

    In 8.04 I had edited etc/samba.conf to read the following, and when I upgraded to 9.04, I elected to keep it.
    My etc/samba/smb.conf is:
    Code:
    [global]
       workgroup = markshome
       netbios name = jmarks-desktop
       server string = anonymous file server
       security = user # was security= share
    usernamemap = /etc/samba/smbusers # this line added for user-level share
       printing = cups
       printcap name = cups
       load printers = yes

    [common_share]
       path = /sharedfiles
       comment = anonymous share for all users
       public = yes
       writeable = yes
       browseable = yes

    [printers]
       comment = All Printers
       browseable = yes
       path = /var/spool/samba
       printable = yes
       public = yes
       writable = no
       create mode = 0700

    #==================================Share Definitions
    ==================================================

    # Un-comment the following (and tweak the other settings below to suit)
    # to enable the default home directory shares. this will share each
    # user's home directory as \\server\username
    [homes]
    comment = Home Directories
    browseable = yes
    valid users = %S
    writeable = yes
    I really would like to understand this problem.

    Thanks so much for your help.
