    Re: Acer Timeline 3810T

    Hi there!

I have a problem dual booting Win7 and Ubuntu 10.04 on my 3810T.

The usual procedure is installing Windows, installing Ubuntu by resizing the partition, and Grub works without any problem.

This doesn't work on the 3810T.

When I try the same thing on my Eee PC 1000H, it works flawlessly.

And the really strange thing: When I install Win7 and Ubuntu 9.10, dual boot also works.

So the problem only occurs on the 3810T, and only with 10.04.

Even installing JUST 10.04 without dual booting doesn't result in a proper bootloader.

When just 10.04, or both Win7 and 10.04 are installed, and I tell my notebook to boot from a USB drive containing 10.04, it starts the GRUB on the hard disk. So the USB drive works like a kickstarter for the GRUB installed on the HDD.

So, when I say boot USB with dual boot, it shows me the GRUB menu, and when I do the same thing with only 10.04 installed, it boots the Ubuntu on the HDD.

    Anyone else having this problem?

At the moment, I'm running Win7 and 9.10, and everything just works.

    My guess: An AHCI/IDE problem?

    Hi!
The problem i guess is that you installed GRUB on usb, that's why it just starts with usb on!
I made the same mistake....re-install 10.04 and at the last page of installation go to advace options and select sdb.

That sounds incredibly logical. I will try that. It will take some time though, because at the moment I need that machine for productivity, but I'm optimistic.

Any idea why it just works on the Eee PC? Is the USB drive mounted differently?

Correct: I have the bios 1.20 and I had to click on advanced to install grub where it should be.
    Worked ok for me !

Thanks for the help, it works when I use the advanced button to change the boot loader target.

I'm going to flash back to BIOS 1.17 soon. Annoying fan is annoying...

Useful tips and tweaks for SSD and Linux

    Hi there,

for some of those who has SSD in their TimeLine (bought like this or replaced the conventional HD), I've found a very interested link about some improvements made for Linux.

    Here is the link:

Since I discovered these few minutes ago, I haven't tried these settings, but I will soon.

I'm also owner of the sexy slim Acer 3810T...

Which BIOS version will solve the fan continuously spinning problem?
It's quite annoying to hear that spinning sound whole day

I have at this moment the newest BIOS version, 1.27....

Be sure you have selected in your bios the discret mode because if not you are perhaps working with both graphic card and it's normal fan is spinning high ... I have the 1.20 bios and since I have put in in discret mode I have no fan problem.
    Hope this helps
