yeah, i've also thought about that regarding fan operation and temperature..

    A suggestion:

There is a module called "acerhdf" by some programmer that was initially made for the Aspire One netbook, but which has been successfully ported on the Acer 1810 to reduce fan speed under Ubuntu. The Acer 1810 is almost exactly the same as 3810 in terms of hardware - only smaller screen size and BIOS versions seem to be numbered differently.

Does anyone have the technical skills to inform us how to use this module to control fan speed on the 3810? If it works on the very similar 1810 it might not prove to be too difficult to make it work under 3810.

    Acer 3810TGZ - Ubuntu karmik 64 bits.
Does lm-sensors works? It only detects one sensor for me, and is always at 26.8ºC .
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards.

I think you forgot to run :
    Code:
    sudo sensors-detect
    My sensors output (32bit karmic):
    Code:
    user@machine:~$ sensors
    acpitz-virtual-0
    Adapter: Virtual device
    temp1: +26.8°C (crit = +127.0°C)

    coretemp-isa-0000
    Adapter: ISA adapter
    Core 0: +45.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

    coretemp-isa-0001
    Adapter: ISA adapter
    Core 1: +44.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
    who knows : acpitz-virtual-0
    core 1 : coretemp-isa-0000
    core 2 : coretemp-isa-0001

How does it work the ubuntu 64-bit for you, on 3810t ? I want to install it because 32-bit only supports 3Gb of ram.

Yes, my 3810T (SU9400) uses 10W when it's idle. It goes up to 20W or so when I make it sweat.

    Re: Acer Timeline 3810T

I am using Karmic with fglrx and laptop mode. The total power consumption is slightly smaller than 10 W with wireless enabled and bluetooth disabled. When shutting down wireless and stopping some rarely needed apps I can get close to 8 W and a total battery life of 7-8 h is possible, when being moderate. I can confirm that disabling the discrete graphics and enabling the intel does not give much longer battery life, although (I think) it should...
