SquirrelMail (on Apache) to bypass proxy for Gmail access

Hello! I have SquirrelMail setup on my home server (which I can access from school), and I use it to access gmail (which is blocked by our proxy). It works really well for that purpose. The only serious trouble is that the SquirrelMail 'login' page isn't encrypted. Does anyone know how I can encrypt the connection to the login webpage so that my password isn't being sent across the world in plain text?

The server is using Apache as the webserver and runs Ubuntu 8.04

    Thanks!

Awesome it works, thanks a lot for the link. This stuff is all pretty new to me, is the connection now encrypted just because firefox says it is 'signed' and it has a padlock symbol in the bottom right corner?
