Strange partitioning problem

Just a quick one really, I tried partitioning to an EXT2 and an EXT3 filesystem and ran into problems, so I tried NTFS to check and that worked, I then tried FAT-16 and FAT-32 both of which worked fine, then ReiserFS which worked fine, of course I can install linux on ReiserFS which will be fine for now, I was just wondering what caused the problem with EXT2 & 3, can't use EXT4 as I'm trying MEPIS 8.0 which doesn't support it just yet.

OK that problem was rather strange after it went to ReiserFS I tried EXT3 again and it worked perfectly, I'm pleased but rather confused now.
