Unhappy Graphics prob post upgrade to 9.04

I recently upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 on my Toshiba laptop (details in sig). I waited a while after the initial release because I've had graphics problems before.

The computer boots up fine until the point I expect to see the log-in screen. What I get is a blank screen with a few lines of coloured pixels across the top and no cursor.

I've tried booting into recovery mode and running all the various repair options and this has not fixed the problem.

IIRC the last time I had a post-upgrade problem I had to change the driver via command line.

Re: Graphics prob post upgrade to 9.04

Oops! Just realised I didn't finish my post.

The last fix was changing the driver via command line, but this was done after much trial and error and a few hours on the phone with a mate. Silly me didn't document the process so I have no idea where to start.

Can anyone here help out / point me in the right direction?

    TIA
