    KDE vs. Gnome

As per my other thread I'm a noob and so I have noob-ish questions.

I'm trying to play around with both gnome and kde and see what the differences are, but are there resources around that help paint that picture. Is it purely personal preference? Does one have any distinct advantages over the other.

Everyone will tell you different things. Gnome users will tell you that gnome is better because of this and that and that on the other hand kde users will say kde is better because of that and this and that. I`m a KDE user myself. I love it. Explaining the advantages and disadvantages will take a long time. They`re both good man. I`ve been with both of them. Mostly depends on what you want

    Re: KDE vs. Gnome

Purely personal preference. If you like Microsoft Windows, its classical look, all the programs begining with a "K" and have a reasonable specs, then go for KDE. If you like a more original feel, go with Gnome.

There is my GNOME desktop below. Completely customisable.

Hope I didn't sound to bias, but it's my opinion.

It's personnel, neither is better than the other. I like KDE and I don't think mine looks anything like windows. The picture frames and the wallpaper are all slide shows so it's changing all the time, that's how I like it, for now anyway.

    Re: KDE vs. Gnome

It comes down to personal preferences. Personally I prefer the greater integration of KDE within it's components and k3b is an outstanding application (although it can be installed on gnome too). Since amarok 2 came out KDE is lacking an audio player to come close to amarok 1.4.10 (although there is a PPA with amarok 1.4 in)

    Plasmoids are good fun too

You're dirty, I hope your get tested for any Desktop Transmitted Diseases.

I like gnome. I couldn't really tell you why, except that it felt more natural to me. KDE seemed to much like windows and I didn't like that.

Thumbs up Re: KDE vs. Gnome

There is a pretty good introduction to the Gnome desktop at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNOME

and the KDE desktop at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KDE

Personally I like Gnome for its simplicity.

Hehe, the good old KDE vs Gnome!

If you want native Ubuntu you have to choose gnome, and its also a very good place to start in the world of open source software.
I prefer gnome, kde looks nasty (or it used to when I first tried it).
Also most apps I find are written for GTK also which helps them meld with the OS theme.
    System Specs:
    Desktop: E6420 (@3.4GHz, Water Cooled), 4GB DDR2, 1.6 TB HDs, X1950 Pro (OS Driver),
    Dual Boot Win7/Jaunty, 19" 4:3 + 24" 16:9.
Laptop: Toshiba L30, T2080 Pentium Dual Core, 2 GB DDR2, 250GB Hard disk.

I believe the OP question has been asked and answered.

    Moved to recurring discussions.
