9.04 Upgrade Not Working: Black Screen!

I just ran the upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04 (Ubuntu) on my laptop. It boots, I can enter my username and password, and then I can hear the African tune as it loads...then nothing except the mouse cursor and a black screen. Ubuntu was working flawlessly in 8.10. This is terrible!

Help, please?!

Oh, yeah...sorry I should go into a bit of more detail.

I am running off the Grub bootloader to dual boot Vista and Ubuntu on an Acer Aspire laptop. The screen also will show only the wallpaper periodically but will NOT show anything else and goes black again quickly.

I am writing this thread in Windows and disappointed to have to do so.
