Hi, I was a bit tired of Xandros on my Asus eee pc 901, because I got so few security updates. So I installed Ubuntu 9.0.4 remix.
Now I encountered the same problem as many here with a hidden SSID, which hinders the wifi connection.
I.m.h.o. there is no valid reason in general to hide your SSID, but nevertheless, this should work. It worked with Xandros, it works with OpenSuse 11.1, so Linux is not at fault here.
I found this work-around
Open a terminal, enter: sudo iwconfig ra0 ESSID <your-ssdid>
You have to enter your password. After a while the connection is established. ra0 is the name of my wireless card. Unfortunately, you have to do it after every start.
But why hide your connection? It is not a security matter. Anyway, as soon as you unhid the ssid, it will be picked up by all the wireless neighbours automatically, and kept in their internal tables, and be lookup up at each startup . To prevent that, you should keep your ssid hidden from the very start, so never broadcast it.
My router has a hard disk in it, that starts spinning as soon as some foreigner tries to make contact, and I don't want that. That's my sole reason to have a hidden SSID.
What is a security issue, is the strength of your password.
I took my password from the famous grc site: https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm
Hope this helps a bit.Marc
