Stopping gnome produces blank screen and system hang on Jaunty 9.04

I'm almost about fed up with Jaunty and its bugs, but in a last honest effort I'm going to try and get this working 100%. My laptop (Compaq Presario 700) won't shut down. All that happens when I use the shutdown option is the computer starts to shut down but then goes to a blank screen, no splash, no cursor, and it freezes. I have to hard reset manually. I had read that the wireless card might be the culprit so i tried:
    Code:
    sudo ifconfig wlan0 down
    sudo ifconfig eth0 down
    sudo ifconfig eth1 down
... but to no avail. I also tried vga=791 or apci=off in grub with no results. Also of note is that removing splash and quiet will show the messages on startup but with no effect on the shutdown. I've also tried:
    Code:
    sudo modprobe -r 8139too
    sudo modprobe -r 8139cp
    sudo modprobe -r orinoco_cs
... also with no results. Finally I pulled the wireless card out completely... with no results. Just the same problem over and over again.

I had temporarily given up and started to try and fix another damn Juanty problem, my screen resolution when I noticed that stopping X...
    Code:
    sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
... reproduced my problemm a blank screen and a frozen system. What the hell is going on here and how what message logs do I have to look at to see what is happening?

Re: Stopping gnome produces blank screen and system hang on Jaunty 9.04

I have been working on a problem with a USB sound card not having an IRQ.
The only reason that this might be relevant to your situation if I leave it plugged during shutdown sometimes it starts to negotiate with the system for an address and I end up with the system power on with a system halted message on screen.
The operating system has stopped but it did not power down.
    I would try:
<shift> F1: to get to regular terminal.
"sudo reboot" or "sudo shutdown -h now"
then watch the messages as the processes shut down.

syslog may offer some clues "cat /var/syslog" will show results.
    dmesg might show some conflict.

Hopefully that gives at least somewhere to look.

Re: Stopping gnome produces blank screen and system hang on Jaunty 9.04

Ah but there in lies the rub. I can't get to terminal outside of X... the instant X stops (or tries to stop) it's blank screen and unresponsive system. <shift> <F1> actually doesn't do anything for me anyway, neither does <ctl> <alt> <backsp>, but thats besiedes the point. Any attempt at stopping gnome or the X server produces this problem.

The /var/log/syslog however seems to produce some interesting results

Re: Stopping gnome produces blank screen and system hang on Jaunty 9.04

Well I'm giving up folks, I've already ranted a bit in another post for one of my other major 9.04 issues so I'll spare you here but I'm going back to Hardy. Jaunty just has too many major major bugs for me to deal with that basically make my laptop useless. I guess I'll just have to wait for the next stable release. F**k Jaunty.
