Compiz may also be acting up. Try running it at a res smaller then your native desktop res. That sometimes helps.

lovin the game... but gettin sick of being kicked from full screen to windowed. at that point I have to do a hard reset every time. Anyone know why games kick out from full screen after a little ?

I have the same problem with openbox and I have no idea why it happens... You can just press Ctrl + Alt + F1 and type in your username/password and then run killall -9 sauerbratenc or something like that. Then press Alt + F7 to get back to the desktop.
