    upgrade 9.04 - system locked, x-server ruined

    hi group

this is bad: after upgrading to kubuntu 9.04 only garbage is displayed on my screen - i can'T login anymore. i even can't open a text-mode session with <ctrl><Fn> - in fact the keyboard does not react. i tried to use recovery-mode - but unfortunately it does not let me in as root with my sudo-password. i guess something went wrong with x-windows. (is it a problem, i have an old ati-card?) but without being able to login, how can i repair it?

    thanks,
    stephan

ok, luckily i could login via ssh (despite the fact this is really bad)

here's the last portion of my sys.log:
(it says something about x-server dying.)

Re: upgrade 9.04 - system locked, x-server ruined

    i did the following now:

    sudo dpkg --remove fglrx-amdcccle
    sudo dpkg --remove xorg-driver-fglrx

and it seems xorg is up and running again. hurray!

but this error is a real showstopper - it shows that ubuntu is still way from recommending it to my mother ...

(i'm starting to hate this ubuntu stuff ...)

i mean, wouldn't it be a good idea to tell people not to upgrade because of certain problems????!!!! what kind of people are programming and testing this? i think next i'm thing is getting a mac - it's expensive, but at least it's working ... (((

It is usually a really good idea to remove proprietary drivers before upgrading.

sorry for being a bit rude - but i was a bit pissed off because i wanted to work and not repair things.

you're right, it's a good idea and i learned this now the hard way - BUT if it's such a good idea, why can't the system inform me about the fact? Also, why can't the release notes be displayed right after clicking on the upgrade button? maybe i'm a little lazy bacause i didn't check the release notes in detail before - but i expect the system to support me here. after all, ubuntu claims not to be a pure expert-system - it should also be useable for the average use - and the average user surely is lazy!

    Hi,

I'm having a similar nightmare. I can't get into the command prompt as the keyboard doesn't react and I can't seem to enter a password. Please check out my thread at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1181268.

    Thanks!
