Re: Who is going to test the Windows 7 RC?

    Being a supporter of Windows!!!!.................
by which I mean I have to support Windows on clients machines I have done the necessary and installed Win7. I placed it on an entirely new platform.
I do have a small whinge about the install process in that while it is formatting the disk there is no progress bar. Unwary and inexperienced installers might just think this is broken after a few minutes and reboot thus getting into exactly the same position over and over again.
As with other contributers, I have not broken it yet.
I have it set up sharing keyboard, mouse and monitor via a KVM with my Vista machine. Juxtaposing them like this does highlight some of the inherent slowness of Vista.
Any one can see the family resemblance to Vista which is disappointing - it might give people a resistance to accepting it.
I have installed Open Office, Firefox, Thunderbird, Opera, Safari, GIMP, FileZilla - they all seem to work OK. I have not installed Office 2007.
Where there was a lack of drivers I used the Vista drivers from the motherboard disk and they seemed to work OK
I installed AVG Antivirus which seems to be OK.
I am trying to use it as if it were a production machine but hasten to add I am not trusting it with any data - that is all stored on our server.
Win7 does seem to have the edge over it's predecessor but I am still reserving judgement.

Re: Who is going to test the Windows 7 RC?

I had heard there was a 'show desktop' feature in Win7 as we have had in Ubuntu for some time.
Boy, you have to look for it. It is at the far right of the task bar to the right of the date and time display. THERE IS NO ICON WITH IT.
There is however a very nice feature associated with it. If you hover over the area it clears the screen of the windows except for an outline of the currently displayed windows.
This could be a useful feature in our next release?
