I like what the author says at the end about not having hard data. Why doesn't Canonical commission some usability tests among Linux enthusiasts and the general public? Let the people speak.

The other thing is that a lot of these issues would be resolved if you simply gave people the ability to highly configure the bubbles at an application and situation level.

    Hi

I will in fact be conducting some user studies over the summer as part of an MSc thesis with Canonical. So with luck we should see more happy users in the next version of Ubuntu

They should give 100 pre-loaded computers out to random people and work with the feedback they provide.

I've had the following problems with someone I gave Ubuntu to:

"I cant get Itunes to work"
"How do I connect to my wiress router?"
"My cellphone wont work with my computer"
"Can you install spotify for me?"

These are very basic things, that most people can easily do in Windows.

Let's face it. Using these forums as a place to find out about usability issues wouldn't be a good idea, because most people on here are computer hobbyists. The Guinea pigs need to be normal people.

Funny that. I've had very similar questions from Windows users.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
