Re: Freeze in Jaunty

I upgraded (ie not a clean install) to Karmic last week hoping to escape the dreaded system freeze in Jaunty. Thought all was well until this morning. Just froze on me again so seems Karmic inherits this problem.

Re: Freeze in Jaunty

Yes I went through hell to upgrade and finally have a Karmic installation that claims to be fully updated... I'm seeing fatal freezes at least once a day.

From the logs:

yelp[2728] segfault at 0 ip <large number> sp <large number> error 4 in librarian.so.0.0.0 [large number]

gnome_screensav[5262] segfault at 0 ip <large number> sp <large number> error 4 in libGL.so.185.36

gnometris[<no.>]...segfault... error 4 in libGL.so.185.18.36

This distribution appears to be a real mess with a lack of discipline and quality control on the part of management.

I have a SATA DVD drive. This is an interesting theory but a major problem in that SATA seems to be the big kahuna in disk periperhals these days. I have a USB/external around here. I might give that a try.

I did a fresh install cause upgrade didn't work well for me. No problems at all with freeze on Kubuntu Karmic. Maybe you should try clean install.

Second that. The upgrade also causes problems with people who had no freezes in Jaunty, whereas all clean installs seem to work fine in those cases. I'm excited to hear your findings!

For me personally this is the best Kubuntu ever!

Everything works after clean install. Desktop effects are very fast on my weak laptop. It's very stable. Many programs that were problematic in 9.04 now seems very "finished". Power up and shut down are very fast 50/9 sec.

Guys, I'm excited to hear the good news.
However, after experiencing many "fixes" myself that turned out to be short-lived, I don't want to start the victory parade too early. What kind of uptime are we seeing with a fresh install?

Please forgive me if my question seems negative. I'm just looking for the end ...

I've installed Karmic as soon as it became available and had no freezes since then.
For the uptime: I never had it turned on for more than 30 hours but no freezes.
I'll test the uptime soon and be back with statistic.

edit:

Turned the computer today; 5.November around 11:30 AM and will keep you inform in next posts...

Re: Freeze in Jaunty

I have followed this thread since I installed 9.04, and as I said about a week ago, I would update my status for those curious.
I have had NO FREEZES at all! (After 6 months of consistent infuriating freezes) I installed 9.10 on Saturday and the computer was on for over 4 days without hibernation or restarts. I can leave it on at night to upload/download without coming back to the flashing capslock of doom!
I believe the problem has indeed been solved for me. For those who aren't as lucky, check out the new nvida driver (I haven't installed it yet).
On the other hand I am having a completely different issue with my screen being completely off for reboot (rebooted the first time yesterday). Not sure if it's related or not, or if using the latest nvidia drivers will help. But at least it's not freezing; that was infinitely more annoying
