Fresh install of Jaunty and I got some problems:

USB 2.0 won't work, this may be due to me having plugged in a USB 1.1 PCI card without realizing it (I tried it out a few weeks ago and never got around to unplugging it)
no FGLRX for my ATI card due to ATI dropping development of it, so I've decided to revert back to 8.04 and wait for a 3D enabled open source driver instead, and that will feel very nice

I had absolutely no errors with my clean install of Jaunty except for a few of the icons in the notification area getting a bit jumbled about but that got sorted out in a few minutes. Overall it installed smoothly and within 90 minutes my system was completely set up and customised.

A friend of mine also installed it and its an entirely different story for him with constant crashes every 10 minutes. Needless to say its turned him off Jaunty completely. Not sure what the root cause is other than a general hardware problem.

Upgraded from UBUNTU 8.10 to v9.04. Toshiba laptop, Intel videocard, dual boot UBUNTU & WinXP. Downloaded new packages via the Update manager.
Problems occured in Brasero burner tool, Java and Flash. Removed swfdec flash related items and (re-)installed Shockwave Flash 1.0 r22. But unfortunately Flash really crappy still in Firefox.
I wait with two other PCs until these Flash and video driver problems are resolved.

Re: Share with the community your Jaunty Jackalope install/upgrade experience

I upgraded to 9.04 through the update manager, and I lost my system. I seem to have lost xwindows (startx doesn't work at command line) or something, so I am now in the process of pulling my files off my external hd with Ubuntu installed on it. I would like to emphasize that this was a system I had enough trust in to make it my main os. It had my dissertation and a lot of very important research papers on it, which luckily I am able to recover. I will be switching to another distro because I can't afford the risk, and will be much more weary of "upgrades" in the future. I thought I was learning much about Linux through Ubuntu, but I am completely helpless here.

My question is, why would the developers of Ubuntu send out an upgrade that would render the desktop/graphics of a system inoperable? A few threads I have read seem to point to the graphics card driver, but this is something I don't know how to fix and don't really have the time to learn about. I would be patient and wait for updates and fixes, but does this really help when I can't even bring up the desktop?

I thought an upgrade left what you had in place and made your system better. I was expecting a new updated machine, completely trusting the automated updates from Synaptic and update manager. When it asked me if I would like to upgrade, I ok'd it and did this to my own machine. I don't know why they would make this version available through a seemingly innocuous update when it is not ready for release yet. Hopefully these problems make their way through this community forum to the developers who need to hear about them.

Upgraded from Intrepid - I only have sound in OSS, with an error upon opening Amarok that says ALC888 Analog doesn't work, going back to default or something. Flash doesn't work anymore, either. I've spent an hour looking at the forums and these problems have been addressed, but not solved. Furthermore, the beep upon shut down/restart is obnoxious, however it's supposed to signify to me that there's a problem.... what's the problem!? Something else I noticed is that I had to enable the FGLRX driver to change the appearance of GnomeDo, something I didn't have to do with Hardy OR Intrepid. I keep FGLRX deactivated because it has never worked properly.

First time since 7.10, that upgrade did not start arguing with me for somewhat reason: as in the good old 6.x/7.x days!

    Almost completely unattended! So cool!

I experimented some minor issues with

It would be incredibly nice if the sound system started working just out of the box as at the old 6.x/7.x days... It is simply really annoying to always face the same screen and audio problems you had when running Linux in the early 90's!
No Windoze users will ever switch definitely to GNU/Linux if this nightmare goes on for long.
(This recurrent Ubuntu audio nightmare reminds me I felt the urge to have a forums stable account because of this. I had been successfully running Ubuntu since 6.06 and I had got no need but to read a few posts to solve my problems: then 7.10 and 8.04 came and the multimedia stress with them; consequently, the need to discuss the problems and the possible solutions within the community)

Indeed, it was great when I realized that - for the first time - my notebook Bluetooth and multi-types card reader devices had been automatically discovered and configured.

    Last but not least!

    • Amarok has been upgraded to version 2
    • OpenOffice to version 3!

(I had been in fact evaluating alternatives to start natively running these long awaited stable apps in a way or another)

To conclude my report: the overall impression is positive and makes me feel more optimistic about the future updates. Though I think consistency is still a goal to achieve, Jaunty seems to be far better than the previous 8.x distros! Thanks a lot, Ubuntu team!

Angry Re: Share with the community your Jaunty Jackalope install/upgrade experience

Upgraded from Intrepid. I have a ATI2600 video card. I half expected trouble, and got it in spades. As usual, the graphics didn't work after upgrade. Rebooted in recovery mode, and ran xfix. Previously this worked, and give me un-accelerated graphics - now it doesn't. System now completely f*****d, no method of booting it even. I see some weird graphics at the top of the monitor, and that's it. Sigh... this message brought to you by courtesy of Microsoft...

Come on guys, even if you can't run ATI cards at full rate, at least test the upgrade on a PC with an ATI card. They're hardly rare, are they?

I would suggest you the following
    PHP Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
Then, if the X Window system boots up, I would try out my always beloved EnvyNG: it has always solved my Nvidia problems and it works for ATI cards, too.

This was the Driver info I was looking for! Thanks!
