    undetected USB card reader

I have an older USB 2.0 cardreader which is undetected in Ubuntu 8.04
It is brandless. Works in XP.
    Here is output from lsusb

    Bus 005 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
    Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
    Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
    Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
    Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0d8c:5000 C-Media Electronics, Inc.
    Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

Can anyone help me to make it work?
    I would rather be Ubuntu-ing.

Don't shake my hand. I don't want your germs.

Do you have a card in the card reader? I've noticed that mine will show up in XP even if there's no card in it, but it won't show up in Ubuntu unless I have a card in it.

Yes, there is an SD card with photos in it but unfortunately nothing registers in the menu.

C-media card readers need special proprietary drivers only available for Windows (XP, Vista).
