This How-to shouldn't be telling users to install packages from debian. The intel testing PPA has the packages need: https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gf...g/+archive/ppa
https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gf...repid_i386.deb
https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gf...xup~1_i386.deb

psyke83 I love you!
I'm using a 945GM [8086:27a2]. I tryed everything before, even to revert Xorg intel driver to 2.4, but nothing worked well enough. I was almost to give up with Jaunty, until I found your guide and it worked! Not even Hardy was so fast. 2D scrolling is really smooth, 3D is fast: my Tux races at ~25 - 35 fps instead of ~10 - 25 FPS with the standard Jaunty kernel and UXA enabled.
Some games under Wine (ie IL-2) are extremely slow if Tiling is disabled. I tested it, as suggested on your guide, and luckly my box works without any issues with Option "Tiling" "true", so all my Wine games run smoothly now.
Thank you very much! =D>
Hi, just to let you know this works like a charm on my 945GM . Thanks.

I haven't been able to edit my xorg file since 8.04 or maybe even before that one. Please help. I miss playing Eternal-Lands.

Thanks! This works great! Now everything is zippier than it was in Intrepid One minor quibble: is there any way to re-enable usplash afterwards? For some reason, its disabled. I've tried using SUM, but that doesn't seem to have anything to do, so...
djr@popeye-laptop:~/elc$ ./el.x86.linux.bin
Failed to initialize GEM. Falling back to classic.

I've installed xorg 2.4 and I still can't get eternal lands working. It was playing fine before the update.

My problem goes like this
Intel 845GVSR with on board graphics
downloaded the iso from ubuntu website and installed as fresh copy
Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 starts the installation with GUI but 9.04 was unable to detect my vga and installation went on the text mode.
installed all the packages via aptitude and x11 is installed.
Now,
When boot up x window is not starting up instead login enabled using tty's
i tried to do this
sudo startx
but result was command not found
its says xinit package not installed and am trying to do this
sudo apt-get install xinit
cd reads and says similar package x11-common is installed
what might be the problem of X window starting? how to go ahead and fix it ?
I formatted and installed 8.10. Game's working again. Sad that Jaunty was released and crippled intel's already poor 3d graphics. I tried both rc2 and rc3 kernels. And a few different "fixes" from this thread. I've installed the latest version of Ubuntu each time they release one since 6.04.
