Thanks for the post. My firefox has been crashing very frequently I checked the config file and I found that it contained the "wins" option along with a comment line from me saying that i had added the "wins" option in at a previous date. I can't remember doing this but I suppose it was to try and cure some other problem.

Anyway I hope it fixes the problem, i'll let you know!

So that you could resolve Windows hostnames in order to browse Windows shares, perhaps?

    Point 3 in:

    Which links to:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...50&postcount=4

By the way, I've put the wins argument in that line and I don't get random Firefox crashes.

Yes, that was it. Interesting that you don't get Firefox crashing. Removing this argument definitely fixed the problem I had. It must be connected somehow, perhaps this bug was triggered by a combination of this and some other setting?

None of these solutions works... That is the default configuration, My FF was working Ok until I made an update yesterday and my FF starts to crash. Is there any way to rollback my last update?

I've been having this problem ever since I upgraded to Jaunty, and I have yet to find a solution. I don't have the "wins" option enabled, but I might enable it just for giggles.

For me, when I am using firefox (usually facebook) the entire screen will freeze (except for the mouse), and nothing will work until I do a cold reboot (pull the plug).

    It is REALLY annoying.

I too am having this problem. Firefox crashes sometimes as soon as I start it, and other times it will run for an hour or more and then crash. I haven't found any particular site or page that causes it to happen. By crash, I mean firefox windows will just disappear all of a sudden. No error is displayed, they are just gone. It can happen while I'm using FF, or while I'm doing something else and FF is in the background.

This is on a fresh Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit desktop that I just installed yesterday. From Ubuntu Software Center, I added Ubuntu Restricted Extras, which I think adds flash, java, and other addons for Firefox.

I created a new profile and used it for a while. Then it crashed. Upon restarting, I got this message:

    $ firefox -ProfileManager
    pure virtual method called
terminate called without an active exception
    Aborted

    I don't have wins in my nsswitch.conf.

    Suggestions?

Another thing that might help: increase the size of the Firefox cache, maybe double or more.
