Click Applications/Sound and Video/PulseAudio Device Chooser.(padevchooser) The icon should appear in the panel. Click on it, choose Preferences/Start Applet on session login so it stays in your panel when you reboot. Choose it again, click Volume Control.

You are amazing! For some reason my playback was muted even though my volume control said it wasn't! I can now listen to music again.

For some reason my recording tab sets to mute every time I quit the Volume Control. When starting it and disabling mute seems to be all right. BTW thanks got some nice shots here. Skype is working with no problems(except that mentioned).

I have sound when logging in and I have sound when watching video on sites that do not require Firefox plugins. Here comes the problem ==> On sites that require firefox plugins to watch movie trailers (such as http://movies.yahoo.com/):

1) There is no sound
2) After some video plays, Firefox dies (i.e. Force Quit is necessary because Firefox becomes unresponsive and just freezes)

When I type aboutlugins in the Firefox address bar, everything is enabled. Here are the plugins that I have:

There are lots of suggestions in this thread but I really don't know which ones applies to my situation (if any). I am not sure if my Firefox crashes and lack of sound (while watching yahoo video trailers) are the result of audio problems or video problems.

Absolutely none of this was a problem in 8.10

I'm up for debugging this, I just don't know where to start.

Please ignore my last 2 posts. I didn't read Markbuntu's post and this thread carefully enough before posting probably because it was in the middle of the night. I am going to try to get it working tonight based on his suggestions.

I was really hoping this would solve my problem, but alas it was a no go. I'm experiencing the same thing with my HP dv5z laptop and it's really getting on my nerves. 8.10 worked just fine...

I upgraded to jaunty and didn't do a fresh install and experienced other conflicts that I've already resolved but this is the only problem that remains. If I must I will do a fresh install over the weekend when I find the time.

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

I have a similar problem with my usb headset. As long as the pa volume control is open it doesn't crackle. Weird.....

I would suggest filing a bug report at Launchpad. Please include as much specific hardware information as you can if you do.

model=dv5

to the end of

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

my audio is identical and I've added model=dv5 and no change at all.

one thing i'm wondering is my file is called alsa-base.conf, is this right?

Markbuntu, I followed every singe step in your thread. Everything works as you outlined it.

However, I still have no sound in Youtube, Yahoo movie trailers & MSN trailers.

In this link https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/68518 it talks about starting the pulse audio sound server. I googled this and thought that editing /etc/default/pulseaudio and changing PULSEAUDIO_SYSTEM_START=1 (from 0) and then stopping then starting the service via the commands /etc/init.d/pulseaudio stop & /etc/init.d/pulseaudio start would work but it did not.

I have spent many hours on this and it is very frustrating. I think that I am in the right thread. If not, can someone please point me to the right one.

Again to reiterate, the sound works great as Markbuntu illustrated it in this thread, except for in YouTube, & movie trailers from Yahoo Movies & MSN

Didn't work. I've also tried model=mobile and model=any.

I just burned a cd w/ jaunty and ran it live, but it still didn't produce any sound so I figure its pointless to do a fresh install.
