Desktop Effects working in jaunty on ppc?

I've recently installed jaunty (beta, now release candidate) on my Powerbook G4 5,8 and have been impressed by some things, but disappointed that desktop effects no longer work. Has anyone else tested desktop effects/DRI on PPC jaunty? My video card is an rv350 (mobility radeon 9600).

    Same probleme for me with a G4 2 x 1,2 Ghz PPC
Compiz worked fine with Ubuntu 8.10 but no more with jaunty
    Here are the result of
    :~$ lspci | grep VGA

Mine don't work, but it's an nVidia, which I believe don't work terribly well on PPC Ubuntu

Thanks for the feedback. Have either of you filed a bug? A compiz developer told me that my bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ts/+bug/359839) was actually not a compiz bug, but a kernel bug.

Re: Desktop Effects working in jaunty on ppc?

I think the reason why mine don't work is because nVidia won't release their proprietary drivers to Power PC Linux. Making it hard for the programmers to make a decent driver.
Which basically means you can't use Compiz or anything like that if you have a Nvidia Power PC Computer.. like me.

I doubt there'll be any support for it, as power pc apple is an old platform now and people are focusing on new technology

Cool Re: Desktop Effects working in jaunty on ppc?

On my Mac mini, and my iMac G4 I have the same problem. Desktop effects worked before the upgrade, after the upgrade they no longer work. I should have expected this as over the years this is a running theme for us Mac PPC users when upgrading. Things that previously worked get broken

Re: Desktop Effects working in jaunty on ppc?

That's sad, but understandable, as ppc's slowly die off...

The problem in my case apparently is that the drm kernel module cannot initialize my radeon card properly. If anyone who's posted has a chance, could you check your dmesg to see if the output is similar? The crucial line appears to be:

[ 31.423017] [drm:radeon_do_init_cp] *ERROR* could not find ioremap agp regions!

which appears as the last line in my dmesg output. Just in case you don't know how to find this, typing 'dmseg | grep ioremap' (without the quotes) in a terminal window should find it. (If nothing shows up, then this line doesn't exist in your dmesg.)

albertone, could you mark the bug as confirmed? I would do so myself, but I'm not sure if that's proper procedure.

Re: Desktop Effects working in jaunty on ppc?

I posted a thread about this.

It is a bug in the DRI module. You can compile your own kernel, and things work fine. I have an iBook G4 with a Radeon 9200 Mobility. I'm using Compiz, and other 3D applications.
