There were some pretty massive changes in the X system starting with Intrepid and now the xorg.conf file is utilized far, far less. This is somewhat of a mixed blessing IMO.

At any rate, what prevents you from installing the nVidia restricted driver with the installed Driver Manager? That would be the suggested method.

Re: The new X lacking an xorg.conf

If install it from the manager X will not come back up it looks for files in the xorg.conf file and nothing is there. It says that I am missing a bunch of font files and there are no devices. Far as i can tell the Nvidia driver trys to nmake all of its changes to the xorg.conf file which is not even there. Off of a new install I update the system then i click the restricted driver manager thingy and install the nvidia driver it gets done then i have no X.

Okay, something's not right here. Can you cat your xorg.conf file and post the output here?

The new .conf file in JJ is certainly... brief... in comparison to previous versions, but you should still have one.

What I was asking was for you to post the contents of your xorg.cong file. You can use the editor or you can use the cat (catalog) command to get the output. Sorry if I confused you.

Just use nano and Copy & Paste your xorg.conf file here so I can see what you're looking at. Or NOT looking at, as the case may be.

Re: The new X lacking an xorg.conf

If it is still /etc/X11/xorg.conf than it is blank. I am in gnome right now though. And I have edited xorg.conf plenty of times so I am not doing it wrong.
Thankyou for your help this is very confusing for me

Have you tried rebooting your PC and going into "Recovery Mode" and using xfix?

From what I understand, it's possible to have X running correctly even without an xorg.conf file so I'd actually prefer not to mess with that if we don't have to.

I think that is the one case where
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
    would still be useful.
give it a try and check your xorg.conf again. it should contain device and font info (but no real video config).

as close as I can tell, all vid info is discovered and set via xrander at boot, so after you get x fixed, if you need further custom video configuration, an xrander script may do ya.
