Chances am I have probably updated this guide since you last tried it

Can you post the following output:
    Code:
    ls -l /usr/src

    Hello,

I followed your HowTo but it doesn't work. I had a black screen in place of the login window when server X started.
I run the nvidia-big-report.sh comand and the nvidia-bug-report.log.gz file is attached to this post.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 with the kernel 2.6.28-15-generic and the result of the command "lspci | grep VGA" is
"01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M GT (rev a1)".

Thank you if someone can help me.

    This is just ironic.

This is in the document that you attached:
(WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): The EDID read for display device DFP-0 is invalid: the
(WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): checksum for EDID version 1 is invalid.
I still haven't finished the section I'm writing up on what to do if you are having an invalid checksum from the EDID received from the monitor, so I am afraid that the fix will take a while.

    Quick questions though:
    1) What type of monitor do you have?
    2) Are you able to contact the manufacturer of that monitor and ask for the EDID required for the driver to interact correctly with that monitor?

    Regards

Thank you for your quick answer.

I'm using a laptop and I'm going to send it back to the manufacturer because sometime the screen doesn't work (even under windows). Maybe this will solve the problem.

If your display goes blank from time to time, that means its either a video chip or display issue and not the OS. Happened to my nvidia 6800 before it died finally.

Thanks for providing such a comprehensive instructions. I had an NVIDIA GeForce GT 220 graphics card (please kindly add this card to the list, it was not there when I checked) and once I ran instructions provided it worked like a charm. Earlier my hard disk was making so much noise, I was'nt sure why it was doing so but once the graphics card was installed there was pin drop silence : )))). Thanks once again.

    Tried
    Code:
    sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-185.18.pkg.run
I really don't know what you mean unless you show the exact error you are getting.
