SSHFS via Gnome "Places" menu, poor performance

I'm seeing high CPU time utilization and slow transfer speeds from gnome's ssh 'places' -> 'Connect to Server', while doing transfers I seem to get anywhere from a few hundred *bytes* per second to a max of about 50kbps. While doing these transfers, nautilus jumps to about 50% CPU consumption.

When scp'ing the same dirs via the terminal, I get a few hundred kbps, while using only a few percent of CPU time.

    Any suggestions?

    Anyone else seeing this?

The transfers were all downloads. I'm using 9.04b, but this has always been problematic.
