Rhythmbox does not (has never) imported *all* of my music

I have had a continuous issue with Rhythmbox spanning several versions of RB and Ubuntu but am finally fed up enough that I am going to post it.

My music is in FLAC, MP3 and Ogg formats and is contained on an external USB hard drive. I am able to open/listen to the music via Totem, but RB refuses to import it correctly via ('Music > Import Folder' or via the defined Music Library in the Preferences).

No errors seem to occur, just.... nothing happens.

I was able to locate this bug, filed in the Fedora bugzilla (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=425942) and at it's suggestion, I reinstalled the gstreamer plugins (good, bad, and ugly). Of note, all three are versions including 'ubuntu' in the version level, so I assume that's as close as I can get to a non-third party plugin (as was described was the problem in the FC bug).

Please let me know your suggestions, I've got many GBs of music just waiting to be free...

what you want is ubuntu-restricted-extras pkg (it will drag in all the gstreamer - good, -bad -ugly stuff)

My guess is it's something to do with where and how the volume is mounting (permissions, etc)

For what it's worth, all of the music is on the same (removable) drive where some directories are being picked up and others are not. Not sure if the permissions can toggle on/off that quickly, but I thought it worth mentioning.

is your music in just one folder? I.e. like /media/disk/Music?
If so, output the result of "ls -l" where that is LS -L only in lowercase. This will help us with file permissions (which is what I think it is). The only problem is that it should be able to at least read the files...
Anyway, output the result of that, as well as "sudo fdisk -l" where it is -L and "cat /etc/fstab"
If you want to try just changing all permissions at once, in the root music directory do "sudo chmod ugo=rwx -r *"

I've had the same problem, I think if the file extension is a format that rhythmbox can't play, it skips importing it. I never found a solution, so I switched to banshee, sorry can't be more help

rhythmbox should be able to support all of the above formats. try amarok or another player just to make sure though. besides, I enjoy amarok over rhythmbox.

Unless I misunderstand your question, yes. I use one folder /media/IOMEGA_HDD/music/ with lots of subfolders to segregate the music by Artist, etc.

Please let me know if there's any thing else you need. I tried changing the perms to 775 for a single dir structure and it dfidn't work as expected.

Yep, the problem is with permissions, I believe. The first "rwx" indicates that the creator (not specifically you) can read, write, and execute the files. Group and others (the next two sets of 3 dashes) don't have permissions at all, meaning that they can't do anything. So, try doing this command and see if anything happens:

sudo chmod o=rwx * -r

This command will set the 'other' (chmod o) permissions so that they can read, write, and execute the files. The * is a wildcard that indicates all files, and the -r means to do this recursively (to all files). Try that and see if it works.

djbushido/logos34, Thank you both for your suggestions, but they are not working. Actually, it is the chmod operation that is not working correctly at this time. Please review just an example change in a sub directory.

For sanity's sake, I created a dummy directory structure (1 master fir, 2 children and three files in both) and chmod'd it to 700, recursively. Worked fine. The drive oesn't show up as 'Read only' so I'm at a little bit of a loss here. Not doubting this could be a perms issue, just hate that its getting compounded like this.
