Update manager not working

Is there a problem with the Ubuntu update for Hardy? Everything is fine until I click "Install" and then nothing happens. A few days ago I managed to update 1 or 2 parts of the update of seven updates. Since then nothing _ it doesn't work. Have I done something or is there a problem at the source end?
No messages - computer doesn't freeze - just nothing happens.

Close down update manager if you have it open. Then, open a terminal and post the outputs of these two commands, running one at a time.

Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

I don't know why it is trying to load or update 2.6.24-23, I have 2.6.24-24 installed.

I haven't continued with "[Y/n]? y" as yet.

It updated via the terminal.
I'll try the update manager next week and if it fails, I now know how to do it in the terminal.
