Upgrading Gimp from 2.6.1 to 2.6.6

    Hi,

I was wondering. How could I upgrade GIMP from 2.6.1 (the default version install on Ubuntu 8.10) to 2.6.6 (which is the newest stable version). Just I had a look in the update manager window, and it wasn't listed. Just I'm trying to learn more about Ubuntu, so if there are any guides on what I have to do it'd be much appreciated, because then hopefully I could use what I learn on upgrading other software

    Thanks
    -Den

Re: Upgrading Gimp from 2.6.1 to 2.6.6

The version of GIMP that Ubuntu has installed is a version that has been most tested and stabilized by the Ubuntu devs. In Ubuntu, you don't need to constantly check for the most updated version of a piece of software like GIMP.

Unless there is a particular feature that you're wanting from 2.6.6 that 2.6.1 doesn't have, just keep 2.6.1. The 2.6.1 installed on Ubuntu isn't just 2.6.1, it has been modified by Ubuntu to be more stable on Ubuntu. If you get the latest version, you're not guaranteed that same stability.

If there is a specific feature or bug fix that you really want in the latest GIMP, you need to go to the GIMP website and download the source code for the latest version:

    ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.6/gimp-2.6.6.tar.bz2

After you do that, follow the tutorial on how to compile the source code and install the program:

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompilingEasyHowTo

Then you'll have the latest version of The GIMP

EDIT: Of course, using the deb files mentioned above will be much easier than comiling from source.

Ah cheers. What about complining? Are there any good guides on that, I heard that that was a big way of doing it...?
