If downgrading the accel method didn't speed things up, try upgrading. For that you will have to upgrade to Jaunty and change XAA to UXA (in xorg.conf)- the new implementation of EXA. It has been reported to work well on your chipset:

Well, I don't want to upgrade to 9.04 yet, 'cause it will probably take me another 2 days to get my wireless working, that's tricky, too.

So I guess there is no one who has some other ideas about this...

Hey, is it possible that my graphics card has only 8 mb memory allocated to it?
Also I can't see any way of changing it from bios, is that possible?

Well, I upgraded to ubuntu 9.04 but the glxgears is the same:

glxgears
2493 frames in 5.0 seconds = 498.462 FPS
2479 frames in 5.0 seconds = 495.772 FPS
2401 frames in 5.0 seconds = 480.068 FPS


Any more ideas?
